Coffee Talk

February—Black History Month.

When I first started teaching, I had no idea this would become my favorite time of year as a music teacher. There’s something so fulfilling about this month, especially getting to explore one of the most important chapters in history, told so beautifully through lyrics and song.

Yes, I may go a bit too far….but do I?

I take the kids on a musical journey back in time to African American Spirituals and why they were so incredibly important. Not only did these songs provide hope, encouragement, and spiritual support, but they also provided coded messages regarding escape routes and the Underground Railrooad to Canada.

In this part of the unit, I pull up a map of the U.S. to ā€˜walk through’ Harriet Tubman’s journey—how her courage and faith led her to escape and then return 17 times to free others — 300 to be exact.

It’s easy to feel discouraged sometimes—whether it’s society, a lack of empathy, or the feeling that "kids just don’t care." But trust me, they do. When 25 kids walk into class and ask, ā€œOk Miss Mooney, where were we in the story, and can we do the Harriet Tubman song again?ā€ and then sing ā€œStand Upā€ celebrating a women whose become their hero, it’s truly moving.

These kids, with their big words, small bodies, and pure hearts, sing with more emotion and conviction than you could ever imagine. It gets me every time.

The Power of Love, Loss and Opening
Your Heart Again with Stephanie Knickle

ā€œHe’s my current boyfriendā€ ā¤ļø 🐾

I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about.

The breakdown of a relationship or marriage for one. The loss of safety. Of trust. Of loyalty. We becomes Me.

Someone asked a friend of mine last month "why has she been alone for so long?"....

Seriously?!?

My first thought was whoa, why does she think I don't want to be alone in the first place?!  We certainly have to make that more normalized...and less a topic for people to gossip about.

My second thought was if she only knew how much the loss of things that were sacred to me HAD on me...and that I would do what I could to protect myself from ever feeling those things again.

BUT here's the flip side.  I've been told recently that I'm being really selfish ...See, when you protect yourself by never letting anyone in your life again, you are also LIMITING THE LOVE YOU HAVE TO GIVE AND THAT OTHERS CAN EXPERIENCE ...it's like I have this big bag of warm hugs, and if I'm keeping it all to myself and no-one ever gets to experience a hug from me (which are the best hugs, I must say), then in all reality, I AM BEING SELFISH!

So, as I wade into the uncomfortable world of opening myself up again to share my hugs, may you too, also never forget how much love you have to give, including to yourself!

Meditation Isn’t for Everybody
(but it should be) šŸ§˜šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

The Dalia Lama once said, ā€œIf every 8 year old in the world is taught meditation, we will eliminate violence from the world within one generation.ā€

Tips for a peaceful experience šŸ§˜šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

  • wake up early (preferably when it’s still dark and very quiet)

  • make your coffee or morning drink of choice that makes you happy ā˜•ļø

  • put on fireplace if you have one and grab your coziest softest blanket šŸ’–

  • guided meditations work best with ear buds if you have them but absolutely not necessary. šŸŽ§

  • settle in on comfy chair with laptop or phone. šŸ“²

Don’t judge. 😊

Bring Sally Up Challenge

The song is rooted in an old slave song ā€œGreen Sally Upā€ that was used to entertain young African - American children.

The original lyrics were ā€œGreen Sally Up, Green Sally down, last one squat gotta tear the ground’. It was a playful song to entertain and occupy the children out in the fields.

SOCIAL MEDIA FITNESS CHALLENGE: Bring Sally Up Challenge: Perform squats or push-ups throughout the song. When the song says "down," stay in the down position until it says "up." Maintain proper form and hold the position—don’t drop to the ground for push-ups or lose form during squats. Keep going as long as you can!

Here is the link to the youtube video of the song….there is a timer so you can repeat challenge and try to beat your own time. Bring Sally Up, Bring Sally Down

I did this with my students. šŸŽ¶
